Sonny Landreth and his band – Michael Burch on drums/percussion and David Ranson on bass – performing ‘Native Stepson’ live at the East Coast Blues and Roots Music Festival also known as Bluesfest
Bluesfest is held over 5 days every Easter in Byron Bay, Australia.
This performance was on the festival’s Jambalaya stage on Friday night April 10, 2009.
This video has been posted for the preservation, promotion and most of all, appreciation of one of the most accomplished guitarists of our time, Sonny Landreth.
For best quality playback, select HD and watch in High Definition.
Song Information:
Native Stepson: Because Sonny was born in Mississippi and he moved as a child to Louisiana with his folks he is not strictly speaking a ‘Louisiana Man’. He is considered a ‘native stepson’. This instrumental piece presents unique musical influences from his chosen place to settle near Lafayette. This piece also displays Mike Burch at his best on the drum kit. Mike’s heartbeat is prominently felt here and you can see his distinctive fingering with the sticks when he twirls them around in his fingers. Mike is a master at laying down a solid bottom end that is emphasized and embellished to accompany the throbbing bass of Dave Ranson. Dave, having played with Sonny for over twenty years, knows instantly and instinctively where each tune is going and how to create the feel that Sonny needs to establish the melody.
